This ‘Famine Food Truck’ Is Countering Trump’s Budget

Theres a new food truck driving around Washington this week but its not serving people lunch. Instead, its dishing out information about President Donald Trumps proposed budget cuts to humanitarian aid.

Staffers from nonprofit Oxfam America are manning a Famine Food Truck to spread awareness of food crises leaving20 million people acrossSomalia, Nigeria, Yemen, and South Sudanon the brink of starvation.

The group is asking Americans to urge Congress to counter Trumps proposed budget.Outlined in March and detailed on Tuesday, the document makes major cuts to development and food aid to other nations.

President Trumps budget proposal is immoral, short-sighted, and un-American, Paul OBrien, Oxfam Americas vice president for policy and campaigns, said in a statement. If enacted, this budget would mean death for many vulnerable women, children and men around the world.

America First must not mean the rest of the world goes to hell, OBrien added.

The U.N. declared a famine in parts of South Sudan in February, and international officials fear that Yemen, Somalia and Nigeria could soon face similar fates. Several factors contribute to these crises, according to Oxfam, including drought, climate change, conflict, and poor governance.

In response to Trumps proposed foreign aid cuts, staffers on Oxfams truck are handing out food boxes. But instead of food, they contain information about the budget, Ben Grossman-Cohen, the groups global campaign manager, told HuffPost.

The side of the truck lists a number that people can text to help contact political leaders. When I texted Famine Truck to 97779, for instance, I was texted a link to a site, which prompted me to input my zip code and address. It then populated witha pre-written email to send to my state lawmakers.

Once someone has texted the number, Oxfam can continue to send prompts to help spur further action, such as calling members of Congress, Grossman-Cohen said.

Trumps proposed budget would cut $11.5 billion or 29 percent from the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), according to The Washington Post. It notably eliminates a program that buys food from U.S. farmers for emergency food aid.

The United Nations, meanwhile, has said the world is facing the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II, according to NPR, and has requested at least $4.4 billion by July to fight extreme hunger.

Trump is proposing cuts that we have not seen in recent memory from either party, Grossman-Cohen said. There has been strong bipartisan support for international poverty assistance programs … until now.It is unprecedented.

Oxfam, which relies mostly on charitable donations for its operations, would not be affected by the budget cuts, Grossman-Cohen said.

Members of Congress from both parties signaled that Trumps budget had no chance of passage. The lawmakers will draft their own budget soon.

The Famine Food Truck is driving around D.C. until Friday, Grossman-Cohen said. It can be located by searching #FamineFoodTruck on Twitter.

Hannity Continues Pushing Seth Rich Conspiracy Theory After Fox News Retracts Story

A week after publishing a thinly sourced, conspiracy-peddling essay that linked assassinate Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich to WikiLeaks, Fox News has issued a retraction and removed the legend from its website.

The network’s affirmation, however, should not mention Fox’s television programming, where prominent reporter Sean Hannity has persistently propagandized the conspiracy ideology since the legend produced. Hannity was still peddling the ideology on Twitter just before the retraction was published, insisting his admirers to read a berth from intruder Kim Dotcom that claimed Rich had definitive links to WikiLeaks. Earlier this week, CNN reported that Hannity had invited Kim Dotcom on his demonstrate.

Hannity didn’t back off the Rich conspiracy theory a duet hours later on his radio demonstrate. He dallied a Dutch TV interrogation in which WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange seems to imply Rich was his source. Hannity also assaulted those in the media criticizing his Rich coverage, announcing them” phony charlatans” because they’re reporting on investigations into probable collusion between President Donald Trump’s campaign accompanies and Russia.

Hannity, during the course of its segment airing just before 4 p. m ., notably didn’t mention that Fox News had just recanted its week-old story on Rich. But the multitude returned a few minutes later during a business break to defiantly state that he wasn’t stepping anything back.

” And all you in the liberal media, I am not or Fox I recanted nothing ,” he read .

Fox News’ May 16 essay, by investigative reporter Malia Zimmerman,” was not initially subjected to the high degree of editorial inquiry we require for all our reporting ,” Fox News said in a statement announced to its website Tuesday.” Upon appropriate recollect, the essay was concluded not to meet those standards and has since been removed.

” We will continue to investigate this story and will provide modernizes as warranted ,” the statement added.

Rich was shot to death stepping to his Washington , D.C ., home in July 2016. Washington police have attributed the killing to a botched robbery.

But soon after Rich was murdered, WikiLeaks produced a trove of internal DNC emails and documents. Some users of online meetings like Reddit, and right-wing reporters — Hannity included — impounded on the timing to propagandize the conspiracy theory that Rich was killed because of his ties to WikiLeaks, and that the DNC, Democratic Party and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton dallied roles in his death.

There is no evidence to support those assumptions. U.S. intelligence officials said in January that the leakages were the result of a Russian hacking procedure that provided the DNC emails to WikiLeaks.

Zimmerman’s Fox News legend originally dallied off of a same essay published by a Washington Fox affiliate, in which Rod Wheeler, a Fox News benefactor who was privately probing the lawsuit, claimed Rich had “confirmed” ties to WikiLeaks. Zimmerman and Fox News eventually added their own reporting, citing an anonymous federal researcher that were allegedly read Rich had sent more than 40,000 DNC-related emails from his laptop to a contact at WikiLeaks.

That Wheeler, who was under contract with Rich’s family but was being paid by a third party, was the only named beginning in the Fox News report was always problematic. Wheeler’s claims were based on secondhand information, and he has a reputation for spreading baseless conspiracy assumptions in his capacity as a Fox News contributor.

The Fox News legend began to fall apart almost immediately after it was published. Rich’s family blamed the articles for” pushing plots” about their son’s death. D.C. Metro police read Wheeler’s pretensions were untrue. NBC News reported the FBI was not involved in the investigation and had never tested Rich’s laptop, contrary to what Fox News “re saying it” had been told by an anonymous federal researcher. Wheeler eventually backtracked on his original pretensions.

Fox News initially stood by its reporting, saying last week that it would” continue to track developments in the legend and will update considerably when developments in the situation warrants .” It frequently informed the legend amid demands for a full retraction from Rich’s family. Fox 5, the regional affiliate, last week updated its legend to be recognised that Wheeler had recanted, but should not retract its article.

Rich’s family published the following statement Tuesday saying it” would like to thank Fox News for their retraction on a legend that has caused deep pain and anguish to the family and has done damaging to Seth Rich’s legacy .”

” We are hopeful that in the future that Fox News will work with their own families to ensure the highest degree of professionality and inquiry is followed so that only accurate points are reported smothering this case ,” their own families said.

Hannity isn’t the only Fox television commentator to spread the Rich conspiracy theory since the legend published online. The” Fox and Friends” morning demonstrate has propagandized the legend as well, and Fox News benefactor Newt Gingrich also heightened it during an form on the network over the weekend.

This article has been updated to include Hannity’s radio show observations .

Morrissey attacks politicians and the Queen over Manchester terrorism response

Controversial singer says MPs remain remote while public bear the brunt of the threat from extremists

The Manchester-born singer Morrissey has hit out at politicians for their reaction to the bombing in his hometown that has killed 22 people and hospitalised 59 more.

In his statement, the former Smiths frontman claimed that politicians are safe from attacks, while the rest of the country is left vulnerable. The MP Jo Cox was murdered by a rightwing extremist last June.

Morrissey cited government immigration policy among his complaints saying the prime minister would never change her immigration policy in the light of the attacks. It is believed that the bomber named by police, Salman Abedi, was British-born and from Manchester.

Morrissey also appeared to suggest that politicians were afraid to refer to Abedi as an Islamist extremist.

The claim that politically correct leaders routinely refuse to mention Islam when referring to terror attacks carried out by people holding a violent interpretation of the religion is common on the far-right. In recent years, many politicians have acknowledged the role of such an ideology once it has been confirmed, while also stressing that it is alien to the vast majority of the religions adherents.

In modern Britain everyone seems petrified to officially say what we all say in private, the singer wrote on his Facebook page. Politicians tell us they are unafraid, but they are never the victims. How easy to be unafraid when one is protected from the line of fire. The people have no such protections.

Manchester mayor Andy Burnham says the attack is the work of an extremist. An extreme what? An extreme rabbit?

Criticising the prime minister, he claimed that her own life is lived in a bullet-proof bubble, and she evidently does not need to identify any young people today in Manchester morgues.

The musician added: Also, will not break us means that the tragedy will not break her, or her policies on immigration. The young people of Manchester are already broken – thanks all the same, Theresa.

Morrissey also criticised the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, who he said had failed to condemn the Islamic State group after it claimed responsibility for the attack. A link to the terrorist organisation has not been confirmed by the security services, who are still working to identify whether or not Abedi worked alone or as part of a cell.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Khan said: London stands united with the great city of Manchester today after this barbaric and sickening attack. This was a cowardly act of terrorism that targeted a concert attended by thousands of children and young people.

Also in line for criticism from Morrissey was the Queen, who he said had received absurd praise for her strong words against the attack, yet she does not cancel todays garden party at Buckingham Palace for which no criticism is allowed in the Britain of free press.

Bresha Meadows, Teen Who Killed Allegedly Abusive Dad, Given Second Chance

WARREN, OHIO Bresha Meadows, a 15-year-old who fatally shot her father in his sleep last summer, pleaded true to a charge of involuntary manslaughter on Monday, ending a legal ordeal that began over nine months earlier.

This is a good child, her attorney, Ian Friedman, said in Ohios Trumbull County Family Court. She grew up in an environment where every adult failed her. This did not have to happen.

As part of a plea agreement, Bresha was sentenced to a year and a day in juvenile detention, as well as six additional months at a residential mental health facility and two years of probation. Shell get credit for time served, so she can move to the mental health facility in about two months. Her record will be sealed and expunged when she reaches adulthood.

Her family will likely be responsible for shouldering the cost of the mental health facility. They are raising money for her on GoFundMe.

It was never in dispute that Bresha shot her father, Jonathan Meadows, on July 28, 2016. The question was why. As her family told it, Bresha took the only action she believed she could to save herself and her family from the man who was terrorizing them.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Brandi Meadows called her daughter a hero and described her husband as a violent, abusive man who made their lives a living hell. She helped me, Brandi said in an interview at the time. She helped all of us so we could have a better life.

Bresha was quickly arrested and charged with aggravated murder and has been incarcerated ever since. As the months passed, her case has become something of a cause clbre, with criminal justice reform advocates pointing to her as an example of how black women and children are punished by the government for simply protecting themselves.

On Monday, Bresha, who was dressed in blue with her hair in braids, cried and periodically wiped her eyes with tissues. It was her 299th day behind bars. The courtroom was packed, with her immediate family filling the benches on the right and family members of her deceased father to the left. Members of the press squeezed into the jury box.

According to Breshas family, the young girl had started to fall apart in the months leading up to the shooting. Her grades plummeted. She began cutting herself. And she ran away, telling her aunts in Cleveland that she was afraid her father might kill them all. He beat her mother in front of her, she said, and threatened them with a gun. She said she was scared for their lives.

His sister, Lena Cooper, disputed this characterization of her brother in an impassioned victim impact statement, stating that he was not a monster.

My brother was a good man, Cooper said. He did not abuse his family. He did not abuse his children.

Its very rare for children to kill their parents, and even rarer for girls to do so. An estimated 50 children under age 18 kill their parents each year in the U.S., according to Kathleen Heide, a professor at the University of South Florida who studies parricide. Most kids who kill are victims of abuse and neglect.Heide said she had evaluated Bresha in May and concluded that was true in her case, too.

Martina Latessa
Jonathan and Brandi Meadows, with their three children. Bresha is the baby in the middle.

There is some documentation of Jonathan Meadows alleged violence.

In 2011, Breshas mother left her husband. She filed a police report and obtained a domestic violence protection order, telling authorities that she was afraid for her life. She told police that Jonathan was capable of extreme violence and that he threatened to kill her and the three kids.

In the 17 years of our marriage he has cut me, broke my ribs, fingers, the blood vessels in my hand, my mouth, blackened my eyes. I believe my nose was broken, she wrote at the time. If he finds us, I am 100 percent sure he will kill me and the children.

Brandi spent three months living with her own mother, Annie Latessa, who was in court on Monday. During that time, Latessa said, she got to know Bresha and her brother and sister. They had a birthday party for Bresha, and she gave the girl a dollhouse. Then Brandi returned to her husband. He broke her, Latessa said.

Ever since then, Latessa said, she had waited for someone to call and say her daughter was dead. But instead, she got the call that Bresha had shot her father.

Breshas cousin, JaVon Meadows-Harris, lived with the family when he was a child. He recently came forward to allege that he too was a victim of Jonathan Meadows abuse. He recalled witnessing Breshas father hit her mother so hard that the blow sent her flying to the floor.

Brandi said she was pleased with the outcome of Mondays proceeding. I never wanted her to mess up her life, she said. Shell have a chance to live life like a normal person.

But when asked if the criminal justice system had worked appropriately in the case, Breshas sister, Brianna Meadows, shrugged.

I think with all the evidence they have, my little sister should not be here right now, she said.
